Normally the winter months are fairly quiet for the croquet section, but the reasonable weather has seen social play on Tuesdays and Saturdays very well attended with court’s capacity overflowing.

The Friday night twilight croquet has also become extremely popular with between twelve and sixteen players regularly attending followed by some drinks and refreshment in the coffee shop afterwards. Several players also enjoyed the special curry and rice meal in the Poolside restaurant as well.

Although there are no official tournaments currently, Rondebosch Coquet Club are hosting a friendly individual round robin game of sixteen players over the four winter months. Several Kelvin players were invited to participate and at the half way stage are doing very well. Rondebosch are also hosting a new T4 competition comprising 3 teams. Kelvin has entered a team for this event. It is hoped that we at Kelvin Grove will be able to host such events next year. We will be hosting a friendly match against Woodside Village Croquet club in August. Woodside, under the guidance of our Mariel De Bie have grown in size and stature and becoming a force to reckon with!

Over the course of August and September, we will be undertaking some coaching classes. If anyone would like to join us please contact myself (Richard Prosser 0828052805) or Di Schuurman (08232874415).

By the time the new season commences in October, the South Africa Croquet Association will have introduced a new handicap system and some new rules to the game of golf croquet. This is quite a challenge for the current referees.

At the beginning of August we lost one of dearest members Georgina Harwood. She died at the age of 103 but still played a good game at the age of 100. Indeed she was seen on world-wide television on a parachute jump albeit in tandem and diving with the sharks!

We would like to take this opportunity in congratulating Jana Van Der Merwe on becoming the new Manager of Kelvin Grove and wishing her very best in this position

We also wish Danie Appel all the best in his retirement and thank him for all he has done for the Croquet Section and for Kelvin Grove as a whole.

Anyone interested in joining us on the croquet courts, please contact our secretary Jean Farrell 082 856 5010 or our coach for a few lessons first, Di Schuurman 083 287 4415.
