The croquet season is now almost complete and it has been a tremendously successful one for all the players and teams so far.
A major team achievement was to conclude the season by winning the coveted Robinson Cup by five clear points. This trophy is a level doubles competition amongst the six associated clubs in the Western Cape and played on a home and away basis. The winning team below, sponsored by Warwick Wealth are from Left to Right:
Margot Prosser: Anne Oxton: Mariel De Bie: Richard Prosser: Di Schuurman: Marilyn Pentz: Thea Lotz: and Daphne Korpershoek.
Not forgetting Neil McHardy and Sue Cloete who also played an important part of the team during the season.
In February the Open Doubles were won by Richard and Margot Prosser just edging out Neil McHardy and Borg Stannius in a tightly fought final.
In March, our Seniors tournament was very well supported and a good member attendance saw Mike Beamish (left) beat Colin Chambers (right) in the final.
On Easter Monday, we held our usual fun croquet sponsored by Warwick wealth. Good fun was had by all.
Our final tournament on home soil was the open singles championship. The event was again well supported and some tremendous croquet was played by all the entrants.
In an exciting final played which lasted for one and a half hours, best of thirteen hoops, Richard Prosser (left) just beat Neil McHardy (right)by seven hoops to six. It was tremendous to see all the players in the tournament stay for the duration of the day and enjoy a few celebrating drinks in the Pool Bar afterwards.
Kelvin Grove players fared well in the Alan Wilson Classic tournament held in Port Alfred at the end of April. Richard Prosser and partner Peter Johnson (SWCC) beating Margot Prosser and Di Schuurman in the final of the handicap doubles. Richard and Peter also won the open doubles and Richard also winning the handicap singles.
